The Knurl editor

The problem

Texture makes a riddim patch, but it usually comes from long chains of distortion, comb, formant and resampling, and it changes from note to note.

What Knurl does

  • A level pattern over 1–16 cycles: in-tune subharmonic growl, rattle and fry.
  • Random level and timing per cycle, the same on every note or free-running.
  • A noise burst inside every cycle, tuned to the note.
  • Counted in cycles, not Hz or tempo, so the grain is the same on F1 and on C2.

Knurling presses a ridged grip pattern into a surface.
